The latest techniques available allow the dentist to produce a new crown within one appointment. Digital impressions are used and the crown is designed using highly specialised software and is then milled in-house. Sometimes you may need to use more conventional techniques and a crown would need two visits to complete: the first for the preparation, impression, shade taking and fitting the temporary crown, and the second to fit the permanent crown.
