Mark qualified as a nurse in 1986 in Leeds and worked in intensive care at the Leeds General Infirmary. Soon after, he enrolled as a dental student at Leeds University and left with an honours degree in 1991. He joined the Maxillofacial Surgery Unit at the Leeds Dental Institute and St James University Hospital. In 1993, he moved to the Maxillofacial, Burns and Plastic Surgery Unit at Pinderfields Hospital, obtained his FDS in 1995 and registration as a specialist soon after.
Susanna obtained her DDS from the University of Gothenburg in 1991. One year after qualifying she obtained her LDS and then returned to university for a year to carry out research on dental caries. She then moved to the UK to work within the hospital service for two years (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery). Susanna went on to complete a masters degree in restorative dentistry at the University of Leeds in 1997.
After qualifying from Guy’s Hospital in London, Patrick entered the hospital service in Malta whilst also working in the private sector for 4 years. He later returned to the UK and set up a private practice in Brighton. Simultaneously he achieved his membership in the Joint Dental Faculties with the Royal College of Surgeons of England as well as a Diploma in Primary Dental Care at the University of Kent before becoming a Vocational Trainer for new dentists. He has also completed a Diploma in Implantology from the Royal College of Surgeons. His main interests in general practice are in restorative CADCAM dentistry and cosmetic dentistry. In his free time he loves sailing.
Piotr qualified as a dental surgeon in Poznan in 1999 and followed his special interest in advanced aesthetic restorative materials and techniques. In 2013 he was awarded The Best Complex Case of the year during his Master Degree Programme in Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry at Manchester University. He then practiced in high profile clinics in the West End of London for ten years before moving to Malta to work at St James Hospital. A self-described education junkie, Piotr attends countless courses and conferences whilst lecturing internationally on aesthetic techniques and CADCAM dentistry. He is a co-founder of the International Academy of Dental Arts, an educational body providing training on advanced techniques and materials of aesthetic dentistry. Piotr believes that helping patients achieve and maintain a healthy, confident smile is one of the best things he can offer.
Brenda joined the unit soon after graduating from the University of Malta with a First Class Honours degree in general dentistry. After a two year stint, she returned to university to follow a 3 year joint Univ of London / Univ of Malta post-graduate programme in orthodontics. She passed with distinction and has joined us once again as a specialist in Orthodontics. She offers a full range of orthodontic treatment including fixed ceramic and invisible braces (Invisalign). Brenda is married and has a wonderful daughter.
After completing the dental degree in 1997 at the University of Malta, Nikolai proceeded with further specialisation in the field of Prosthodontics at the University of Toronto and obtained a Master degree in 2001 and doctorate in 2004. He moved back to Malta to work in private practice and soon after joined the academic staff at the Univ. of Malta. He is presently Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery and Head of the Department of Oral Rehabilitation and Community Care. Nik’s research interests include implantology, oral health and the rehabilitation of the edentulous patient with particular emphasis on the cost effectiveness of clinical treatment. He has lectured internationally on the topic and in 2006, and was awarded the Astra Tech Scientific Award in recognition of research in the field of Tissue Integrated Prostheses. Nikolai loves cooking traditional Maltese dishes and is an avid gardener
Francesca graduated from the University of Malta in 2015 with a First-Class degree in general dentistry. Since then she has worked exclusively in private practice performing a full range of general dental treatments, however her favourite fields are paediatric dentistry and endodontics (root canal treatment). In her spare time, Francesca enjoys spending time with her young family, catching up with her friends and going for long walks by the sea.
Tim graduated as a dental surgeon from the Univ. of Malta in 2008 and joined the Dental and Implantology Unit on a full-time basis. Besides working as a general dental practitioner he spent many sessions working alongside Mark, developing his interest in Oral Surgery and Dental Implantology. In 2011 he was awarded the Diploma of Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MJDF RCS) two years later moved to London working in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Alongside his work in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Tim also further specialised in the field of Dental Implantology by successfully completing a 3-year MSc at the University of Bristol. Tim recently returned to Malta as a Registrar for Specialist Training in Oral Surgery at Mater Dei Hospital with a view to eventually become a Consultant Oral Surgeon at the end of his training. He rejoined the practice here at the Dental and Implantology Unit on a part-time basis, Tim is a musician having spent most of his teenage years and his twenties playing the electric guitar and the bass guitar with a number of popular local rock bands. He enjoys travelling, cooking and spending time with his ever-growing family.
Having graduated from King’s College in 2012 Maria worked in NHS / private general practice whilst studying dental acupuncture as a foundation trainee. She gained hospital experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery as a junior surgeon, obtaining her Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties of the Royal College of Surgeons of England before embarking upon further training in Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology at The Royal London Hospital and Guys Hospital. Maria achieved a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from the University of Cardiff, graduating with Distinction in 2015. She also published articles in Dental Update and The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In 2016, Maria moved to Malta to work in private practice undertaking further studies in dental photography and is presently working towards her Postgraduate Diploma in Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry. She also became a Foundation member of the College of General Dentistry in 2020. In her free time, she enjoys family quiz nights and reading and weekends are spent with her fiancée cooking, eating out or attempting DIY at home.
Paulina, originally from Poland, moved to the United Kingdom in 2003 where she worked and studied. In 2011 she started working as a trainee dental nurse and the following year completed her exams receiving a National Diploma in Dental Nursing, awarded by the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses, UK. In 2013 she successfully enrolled for the Dental Hygiene course at the University of Malta graduating in 2016. Since then she has been working as a Dental Hygienist delivering preventative advice, routine and advanced periodontal (gum) treatment and providing information’s about good oral health. She is a member of the Malta Association of Dental Hygienists and regularly attends professional meetings and conferences. In her free time Paulina enjoys longs walks with her dogs, running and spending quality time with friends and family.
Mary Jane has been a member of our team, here at the Dental and Implantology Unit since 2000. She worked as a dental assistant before chasing her dream to becoming a Dental Hygienist. Freshly graduated in 2015, she joined our team again this time as a Dental Hygienist. In order to provide quality care and meet the needs of the changing health care, Mary Jane is dedicated to update her professional knowledge, skills, values, and practice by continuing professional development (CPD). When left with any spare time, MJ enjoys reading, shopping and spending good quality time with her family.
